Buyer's Guide

How to choose the right RFID smart card

The right smart card comes down to the chip (IC) — which sets your security level and memory — plus the frequency and the card finish you need for printing or durability. Use the guide below, or send us your access-control or ticketing requirement for a recommendation.

Choose by chip (IC)

Chip / ICFrequencySecurityBest for
Mifare Classic 1K/4K13.56 MHzBasic (CRYPTO1)Access control, attendance, loyalty
Mifare DESFire EV1/EV313.56 MHzHigh (AES/3DES)Secure access, transit, payments
Mifare Ultralight13.56 MHzLowSingle-use tickets, events
LF Proximity (EM/T5577)125 kHzBasicLegacy access control, simple ID

For anything involving payments, transit, or sensitive access, choose DESFire (AES-encrypted) over Mifare Classic.

Choose by card finish

  • PVC printable — Full-color, edge-to-edge printing for ID badges.
  • Glossy / composite — Higher durability for daily-tap cards.
  • Pre-printed / pre-encoded — Supplied with your serial/UID data, ready to issue.

Frequency at a glance

  • HF (13.56 MHz) — The standard for cards: secure, short-range tap, ISO 14443.
  • LF (125 kHz) — Legacy proximity systems; simple, low-security ID.

Frequently asked questions

Mifare Classic vs DESFire — which is more secure?

DESFire (AES/3DES) is significantly more secure. Mifare Classic's CRYPTO1 is fine for basic attendance and access, but not for payments or sensitive applications.

Can you print our logo and photo on the cards?

Yes. PVC cards support full-color, edge-to-edge ID printing including logos, photos, and barcodes.

What's the read range of an RFID card?

Typically 2–5 cm (tap range), by design, for security.

Are the cards compatible with our existing readers?

Mifare and ISO 14443 cards work with standard HF readers. Share your reader model and we'll confirm compatibility.

Can cards be delivered pre-encoded?

Yes. Cards can be supplied with serialized UID/data pre-encoded, ready to issue.
